This was also one of those books that were very popular in my college days. Future Shock was written by Alvin Toffler in 1970 and were based on his studies and observations in US at that time. When I read it in 90’s I felt that those same circumstances existed in India at that time and I could relate to lot of things that he had written. But I really doubt if even Alvin Toffler had imagined about the pace of changes that have taken place in the last decade.
The main idea behind the book is that for centuries human beings, technology, society and culture have evolved very slowly. The pace of change was so slow that within few generations that change was not visible. But last century changed all that. People were able to perceive the changes within same generation. In the last few decades the changes became so fast for a particular generation that future was coming as shock to people. I have myself now seen these changes happening within last few years and I could clearly see why these changes are to be called as shock.
The age of communication, Internet, Media is moving so fast that trends, culture and we as human beings have completely transformed ourselves in past few decades. We are able to perceive generation gap within 1-2 years. We have gone from studying computers to studying from computers. From wanting to communicate to wanting to hide. The changes are just so many and they are at all the levels. For people who were born before 1970 the changes are much more difficult and visible. But the interesting part is that for kids born in this century, change is part of life.
This is where the resilience of human society is really showing up. Yes, the future is coming as shock to all of us, but at the same time, human beings have started to adapt to these changes very fast. Maybe, this is also going to be a survival of the fittest once again.
